“I’ve been waiting for this record to come out for years, ever since I saw this band open for The Casket Lottery reunion show in San Diego. The album is exactly what I hoped it would be—an irreverent collection straddling the “post” of “post-hardcore.” Songs like “Enter Skramz Band” are what At The Drive-In probably would have sounded like if they hadn’t veered into a more commercial direction (no judgment, that shit was tight too). That clean edge dissipates at times to bring out some more chaotic and urgent Ten Grand-like shapes. Overall, this is one of the best new records I’ve heard in years. If this band breaks up instead of making new music, I will riot.” –Theresa W.

about
JOHN FRUM (AMERICA)
Found a pot at the end of some curved light
Got wish granted command of an island and tribe
“Huts convert into warehouses”
Turned the chiefs to police
Turned shamans into spies
“Huts convert into warehouses”
Grow a fruit, forbidden
Ferment it on the vine
“Huts convert into warehouses product storage for surpluses from production”
Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Here I come appearing at any party suffering a power shortage
With a trumpet and a snare drum and a bag of seeds to spray
Singing, “You’ll get a bucket of gold lent to you at the end of the bend.”
I pretend in red pen, then I draw and quarter your borders
You gotta take a lot of blues to keep my pain at bay
There's no utopia when the fiery end of my reign glows
The closer you get, the quicker I have to make it fade
“Huts convert into warehouses”
The closer you get, the quicker my trumpet starts to play
“Huts convert into warehouses, product storage for surpluses from production”
Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Here I come appearing at any party suffering a power shortage
With a trumpet and a snare drum and a bag of seeds to spray
Singing, “You’ll get a bucket of gold lent to you at the end of the bend in the arc of time.”
Not too long now ‘til my trumpet starts to play
And all my songs are splitting headaches
“Wrote a bad song,
Called it ‘Bad Son’
Wrote a bad song,
Called it ‘Bad Son’
Let it unplug
Won’t play that one
Wrote a bad song,
Called it ‘Bad Son’
Let it unplug
Won’t play that one
Let it unplug
Won’t play that one
Let it unplug
Won’t play that...”

Been following Somos for many years, feeling that they had an opus in them...well, here it is. Driving pop-punk sensibilities lend an upbeat tone in contrast to the grim lyrical proceedings, and they absolutely pull it off. Evocative music that's been on repeat for me all month long. RIP, Phil PaintedDogs
Fans of Polvo, take note! The excellent Kansas City band Abandoncy has the same fondness for corkscrewing riffs & melodies. It’s great! Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 28, 2022
